Fun On The Ramp

Welcome

This site has been established to acquaint, or in some cases re-acquaint, you with the last of the big, unballasted centreboard dinghies racing in New Zealand - the Emmy, as the M-Class Yacht is affectionately known by her many admirers.

85th Celebration Year

This year marks the 85th season of M Class racing on the Waitemata and its time to both honor our past and  celebrate the legend that is the Emmy.  Our 1922/23 Line champion Mawhiti represents the class in the Maritime museum alongside many other stalwarts of New Zealand sailing and in January we will be present on the water in our  85th consecutive Auckland Anniversary regatta; won initially by Mollie in 1923.

Built into the program this season is a special series event to be held over two weekends (immediately preceding the Logan Memorial) and we hope this will attract those boats who cannot commit to the complete season. Our aim is to assemble the biggest M Fleet for many a year.

Anniversary Day Regatta

The Classic Yachts Regatta held off Orakei and although the breeze turned up in force the same can’t be said for the Association.  We had four boats make the start for Saturdays race and only three on Sunday.

We started with the FF15s (6 of) and beat to resolution in 15kts plus for leg 1 of race 1.  Marksman led around the top only to fly a chicken shoot (fair cop Howie) and be overtaken by both Matara and Matapan as the latter approached North head buoy.  Mahina had a late start and trailed the first three.

From then on Matara powered away in a freshening breeze and sailed faultlessly for a good win.  Marksman passed the Pan uphill and was second, the Pan third and Mahina closed the race out.

Day two included even more breeze and involved some thrilling rides for all.  After a delay while Matara repaired a forestay (and the other crews wore themselves out reaching flat out across the harbour) the start toward resolution was well won by Matara and she went away to come home unheaded.  The Pan passed Marksman downhill and was looking good for a strong finish before her downhaul let go under kite in a strong breeze and swimming and bailing practice became the order of their day.  These were two great days of sailing in good strong breezes with involved some spectacular rides.   Very much enjoyed by all… as was the post match rum (unless you had to go straight to work
